the story so far...
It all began in a San Francisco basement, where twenty year old Quinn Mallory developed a device that could open wormholes into another dimension. Eager to discover where the tunnel led, Quinn leaped inside, and came out to discover that the wormhole led to another universe, in which history had developed in a different way, allowing Elvis Presley to still be alive, and JFK jr. to be the president. Shocked by his discovery, and amazed to discover that on this world, his mother was married to his gardener, Quinn, after being returned to his own world by the vortex, ran to his university to inform his physics teacher, Professor Maximillian Arturo of his discovery. However, Arturo acted as though Quinn had offended him in some manner. Going to his job at Doppler Computers, Quinn discovered that a double of himself had advanced his relationship a little too far with his co-worker, Wade Welles, and had quit Quinn's job. Not realizing that there was a double, Quinn returned home to meet his more arrogant counterpart, who was from another dimension, and travelled them frequently. After giving Quinn the information he needed to open vortexes, and giving Quinn the term "sliding" for travelling to different dimensions, the double departed through a vortex.
Arturo and Wade visited Quinn, who explained the double, and his discovery, astounding his friends by opening the vortex. They agreed to travel to the next world, but accidently expanded the vortex to the point where in sucked in a person driving by Quinn's house in a Caddilac. This person was Rembrandt Brown, a 40 year-old singer on his way to do the national anthem at a ball game. However, on the world they had slid to, Quinn was forced to open the vortex before than a countdown on the sliding device was finished, and they slid out, only to discover that activating the timer (the device that opens the vortex) had erased their home co-ordinates.
Later modifications made it so that the timer could only open the window (the vortex) after the countdown was complete. Missing the slide would force the sliders to remain on that world for 29.7 years, after which another window would open. And so began the quest to find home...
The original sliders
In the third season, in which the FOX Network's meddling had forced movie rip-offs and "monster of the week" stories onto the show, Arturo was killed off by a gunshot from a psychotic Colonel Rickman and replaced by Maggie Beckett (Kari Wuhrer), a younger character which was meant to be appealing to fans. The last seven episodes of the third season were based on the sliders pursuing Rickman for revenge, and ended with a cliffhanger in which Quinn and Maggie were separated from Wade and Rembrandt, who had returned to Earth Prime (their home world). Shortly after the airing of the season finale, the show was cancelled by the FOX Network.
Thankfully, the show was revived by the Sci-Fi Channel, and the stories became more of a hard-science fiction show. On Earth Prime, which Quinn and Maggie returned to, they discovered that the Kromaggs had invaded, and Wade had been captured and shipped off world (Sabrina Lloyd left the show). It was revealed to Quinn that he was from another world. His parents had lived on the Kromagg Homeworld in peace with the Kromaggs until the Kromaggs had began their takeovers. Quinn's father developed a weapon that drove them off. But during the war, Quinn and his brother had been sent to different worlds to live with doubles of their parents.
So
the adventure begins again, with Quinn, Maggie, Rembrandt, and the new
slider, Colin Mallory, trying to find the Kromagg homeworld and rescue
their own home...
